Hanging Mirror

I feel like late at night, at the time when I should be asleep, I come up with the most brilliant ideas.  I am in college, trying to figure out how to hang things using the LEAST amount of push-pins and nails. This was probably the most brilliant think I've ever come up with! I was trying to glue a regular white plastic hanger onto the top of my mirror. My friend suggested I try to do that with a metal hanger so that it would stay better. (Super gluing plastic on cheaper plastic doesn't work so well- FYI.) Then I saw in my closet that I had a hanger with cheap little clamps on the bottom end. Like for hanging up jeans or something.  It was PERFECT! I clipped it onto the top of my mirror and I only put ONE hold in the wall and wa-la! :)
Here is my finished project!

Homemade microwave popcorn

Genius. Who would have thought. Why pay $3.00 for a box of 5 or 6 bags of popcorn smothered in preservatives and butter, when you could buy your own pack of brown bags (50 for $1.00), and a large back of unpopped popcorn for about $2.25 and make 10 times more "bags" of microwave popcorn! Way healthier and cheaper!

Christmas Crack....aka Saltine toffee

This is by far my favorite treat. I could eat it all day. Everyday. It is DELICIOUS. This has the best combination of toffee, crunch, and chocolate.  There are many different recipes online for this.
(For recipe and photo credit click here)

The recipe is pretty step by step. Make sure to not burn the butter and sugar.
I also like to top mine with crumbled graham crackers, candy bar (such as butter finger or symphony) and I also enjoy crushed pretzels. Be creative!

No-bake Butterfinger Fudge

YUM! This title sealed the deal.
A) I didn't want to be stuck mixing and melting sugar and stuff all afternoon in the kitchen, and B) "No-bake," sounds promising, right? :) I put it to the test to see how WELL it would taste!  The recipe looked easy. So I ran to the store, bought a couple ingredients that I didn't have right off the bat, and began mixing away! 5 minutes later it was done! Holy Crap! That's too good to be true! Mine turned out just as good as the Pinterest picture:
(For recipe and photo credit click here)

But to be honest, I wasn't a fan.  I tried about a quarter inch slice, and wasn't satisfied. I wanted a fudge that I would want to eat the whole pan of! I wanted it THAT GOOD. And it just wasn't that appetizing to me.  In fact, I just didn't like it.. AT ALL. I will never make this again. It was too light and powdery tasting. But if you're into that, you'd love it!!! Oh well. Lesson learned!

Freezer Breakfast Sandwiches

These look delicious, right!
(For photo credit and recipe click here)

When I made them, I used:
Whole Grain English Muffins
Bar-S Smoked Ham
Pre-sliced Cheese
and eggs

I cooked the eggs in a muffin pan first, with a little bit of garlic. Then I crisped my English muffins up a tad bit and then started creating my sandwich.  I put a cooked egg, 4 slices of ham, and a slice of cheese on a cut-open English muffin.  Then I put them in the freezer so that they could be convenient! (I wrapped them in a napkin first, and then putt 6 of them in a Gallon sized Ziplock bag. My reasoning behind the napkin part, is so that the night before, when I put one in the fridge so that it would be thawed in the morning I could just put it straight into the microwave since it had a napkin wrapped around it, I wouldn't have to get out a plan and all that jazz.) Brilliant idea! But man, I didn't like the taste at all... I don't know how McDonald's does it, but I haven't tasted a breakfast sandwich as good as theirs in a while! Congrats McD's. You Win.

Coconut Oil

I keep finding a lot of pins about Coconut Oil and reading about how great it is for cooking, so I decided to put it to the test!

I cut up some zucchini, yellow squash, a medium onion, and some asparagus and cooked it in a pan with a tablespoon of Coconut Oil and let me tell you... It was DELICIOUS! It added a very slight sweet taste, but yet tasted very fresh and healthy! I will definitely try cooking with more Coconut Oil in the near future!

Graham Cracker Crust

TEST #19

Graham Cracker Crust

This was one of the most delicious crusts. Something about graham crackers, sugar, and butter makes my mouth water. I had to make more crust because I ate so much of it! I tasted it to make sure that it would make a yummy crust.. and then I tasted some more.. and then one more bite.. then one more bite.. then just ONE more bite... then a half a bite.. hahahaha. Then, I had to crush some more graham crackers because I didn't have enough to make the whole crust! OOPS!

Homemade Mac and Cheese

TEST #18

Homemade Mac and Cheese

Carlee and I decided to throw together some homemade mac and cheese. I usually don't cook with noodles, not a big pasta lover, or cheese, not a big cheese lover. But! I am trying to get myself to try new things.. so it began.
We decided to double the recipe. Then we realized we didn't have 4 cups of the same pasta.. So we mixed shells with another kind of noodle... (FIRST PROBLEM). Then we added the milk and simmered the ingredients. We took 11 minutes off the time from this recipe and the noodles were STILL over cooked. Kinda bummed. Who likes squishy noodles? Gross! For those texture freaks, you know what I'm talkin' about. *Cough Carlee*
Then we shredded the cheese and added the the salt and Dijon mustard. At this point, it was gross tasting. I Mean, besides the noodles being over cooked, it was still gross! So we decided to spice it up with some cayenne pepper.. It definitely helped. But it was still missing something. It just didn't have a FLAVOR! We also added nutmeg and pepper and it just wasn't cuttin' it. I ate about four bites and was done with that soggy, flavorless mushy mac and cheese. Definitely a learning experience.

Homemade Egg Rolls

TEST #16

Homemade Egg Rolls!

This recipe is from one of my old friends Kianna who is currently serving a mission!
She invited me over one night when she made these egg rolls and, let me tell you... They are DELICIOUS!

This is one of those "throw it together" recipes. So for the sake of this being a blog, I made these again and measured out how much of what ingredients I used so that you could know the measurements.

But for now.....

Cube chicken

Cook in a sauce pan with 1 1/2 c teriyaki sauce, 1 TBSP Soy sauce, 2 large cloves of garlic, 1 1/2 tsp fresh ginger root, and 1 c. brown sugar.

I used this Kikkoman Teriyaki Marinade & Sauce but I recommend an actual teriyaki sauce, not anything like a Marinade. If you do use a sauce, you only need to add about 1/4 c. of the brown sugar. But if you are using a marinade, it usually is more salty so you will need more sugar!

Mix and let the chicken cook in the yummy sauce!

Cut up broccoli.

Put in garlic, soy sauce, and ginger.
Steam it until soft.

(I also cut up baby carrots and steamed them as well! )

Take them both and wrap them in the egg roll wrappers.
(I made homemade egg roll wrappers, so my wrappers are more circle shaped, but usually they are square if you buy them from the store.)
Take your egg roll wrapper and add a scoop of chicken to the center. (about 2 TBSP's of chicken)
Then add a little spoonful of steamed broccoli
Then add a few pieces of steamed carrots
Roll wrapper and deep fry in 3/4" of oil. Drain on paper towel!

Enjoy!

Easy "Calzone Rolls" also known as Pizza Rolls!

TEST #14

Easy "Calzone Rolls" also known as Pizza Rolls!

I was excited when I saw this recipe because I used to work at Papa Johns and for a period of time they advertised "Pizza Rolls" and they were so fun to make! So when I came across this recipe I was very excited!  This calls for only few ingredients and tastes delicious! You take 2 loaves of frozen bread dough, thawed. (My favorite to use is Rhodes Bread Loaves.) Once you have the bread thawed, just roll it out until its about 1/3 inch thick.  Top with cheese and other favorite toppings. (Keep it limited to about two or else they will be harder to roll.) And then roll from top to bottom. Cut. (I like to cut dough with dental floss.) And place in sprayed pan and cook! Delicious! We used to sneak these into the library during finals week so that we could eat while we studied! Wonderful dinner idea!

Make Up Brush Cleaner

TEST #9

Make Up Brush Cleaner

I came across a pin for cleaning make-up brushes.. I know I'm dumb sometimes, but I never even thought to clean them... So! Today I decided, "Hey. First time for everything!" I followed this "make up brush cleaner" recipe perfectly and I rinsed out SO much make up from my brushes!!  I loved this recipe (1 part olive oil and 1 part dawn antibacterial soap!) "Olive Oil to moisturize your brushes. That sounds weird, but just go with it. [And] Dawn (soap), as your antibacterial agent," says the blog.  It worked really well on my brushes and I am going to start doing that more often.

Wood Block Decorated for Jewelry and Pictures

TEST #8

Wood Block Decorated for Jewelry and Pictures

(Before you look at my picture below, click on the titled link above and see what inspired me from Pinterest.)  I saw the Pinterest picture and thought, "I HAVE TO MAKE THIS!" So I went to home depot to get wood.. so many options.. Uhhhh... The board that was about 3/4" thick was about $25.. But I wanted to make a board in under $10. I asked the worker, "If I get you to cut this in half and I only take half, does that mean i get this wood for 1/2 off?" He informed me that I still had to pay full price. So, I told the worker that I didn't want expensive wood, and he informed me that I could get REALLY CHEAP wood for .52 cents in the back. I was excited! I went back and picked out 3 pieces of wood. two 4 foot pieces of 2 by 4's... and a piece of wood that was 3/4" by 1 foot by 4 feet. (Does that make sense?) Anyways. He nailed it together for me so that I could cover it in fabric and have my 3/4" piece come off the wall a few inches. It worked! I just hot-glued batting (as well as my choice of fabric) to the wood and then purchased rick-rack and crossed it so that I could stick pictures onto the board to have on display.  I then put screwed hooks into the bottom for my jewelry to hang and i was finished! Such a fun project and mine turned out way cute!! :)

Bobby Pins

TEST #7

Bobby Pins

I don't know about any of you, but the people in my house are SICK of finding my bobby pins everywhere... Each day they can all tell which rooms I relaxed in because usually when I relax, I lay down and take my hair down- which means my bobby pins all need to come out of my hair so that I can be comfy! Then I lose them all over the house and can't find them the next morning when I'm getting ready. Or they get messy everywhere in my bathroom drawer and I can't find them. So I bought a little magnetic gadget for sewing pins and put it in the bathroom for my bobby pins. So genius!

Goals

TEST #6

Goals

I decided now that I am home for summer that I needed to set some goals.  I thought, "this will be so easy!"....NOT! It's been very hard!  I came across this pin and thought, "I HAVE TO TRY THIS!"  It's been VERY successful! I bought a mini pack of post-it notes and cut them into third's (to save paper), and put a number of the month on each of them and stuck them next to my mirror that I use to get ready each morning. Every morning I get to look at my two lists of goals.  You can either take the sticky note down after you've accomplished your goal for that day, or just put a check mark on it. I like just putting a check mark because I am one who likes to see my progress.  If I were to take each sticky note down at the end of the day (if I accomplished it) then I wouldn't get to see how many days I did it for! I feel SOO accomplished each night when I get to put that CHECK MARK!

Double Crunchy Honey Garlic Chicken

TEST #5

Double Crunchy Honey Garlic Chicken

DELICIOUS! This meal was so great! One thing that I would make sure to do next time is just flatten the chicken a little more so that the chicken would cook at the same rate as the crunchy outside. This chicken was full of flavor and had many different tastes in it! My younger siblings didn't enjoy is as much because it had too many tastes, but I enjoyed it a lot!

Crispy Baked French Toast

This was a hit! I made it one morning for my family and I really enjoyed this breakfast!  It was extra crunchy, yet still soft in the middle. We added butter and powdered sugar and gobbled this right up!

On the downside, it is faster to just make normal french toast, but it worth every extra minute of cooking!

Quick and Easy Blender Salsa!

This recipe was exactly as the title describes.. Quick...and...Easy... And that's exactly how it tasted...

This is a great recipe to whip up to add a nice touch to top off a meal. Enchiladas, beans, taco, or nachos perhaps? This recipe was great, but its not a recipe that I would make to JUST eat with chips, but nonetheless, I'd say it was tasty!

Disneyland Dole Whips!

TEST #2

Dole Whips!

I was so excited to make this recipe! I've been to Disneyland many, many times, and I can only remember 2 times that I left without treating myself to a dole whip...AND I still regret it!   I found this recipe and decided to give it a try! It took a while, because you have to time it out perfectly to get the desired results, but it turned out alright. I'd rate this recipe a 3.9/5. I used the can pineapple, just as listed, except I didn't really like how in the end you could feel the pineapple slivers. That's the one thing about pineapple that I don't like, so I had a hard time enjoying it 100% knowing that I could have just gone to Disneyland and purchased another one.....nah, just kidding. My homemade whip was good and gave me the same taste as Disneyland, just with the little annoying pineapple slivers. But it was sure yummyyy!!

Watermelon and Strawberry Lemonade

TEST #1

Watermelon and Strawberry Lemonade

I was very excited to make this. It's summer, and who doesn't want a mouth watering, fresh fruit, homemade lemonade! This lemonade was good. I don't think the watermelon that I used was sweet enough because my lemonade wasn't TOO sweet, I probably couldn't have adjusted the recipe and added more sugar, but I wanted to try the recipe just as it was written. I decided to also use the left overs and put them into mini ice molds so that I could just pop them in my mouth whenever I wanted a sweet treat. Unfortunately that was a fail. I don't recommend doing that with this recipe. The watermelon definitely adds a different texture to your lemonade, but nonetheless, I would make this again.
